Chris Gammell: Oh, thanks, thanks. Yeah, 2015 has been a crazy year. So I'm looking forward to 2016, but it's also, yeah, there's been ups and downs for 2015. So it's kind of nice to see it go, but it's been a lot of good news, too.
Dave Jones: All right, well, let's get the highlight reel. What's been the ups for you?
Chris Gammell: I think, well, okay, so I got a girlfriend, which is amazing for me. Yeah, yeah. It's like that's, yeah, especially for someone like me who just lives on a farm.
Dave Jones: No car. I was going to say, living out in a country, it's usually like, you know, less population density makes things tough, yeah? Uh-huh.
Chris Gammell: Yeah. And then, but, you know, I really enjoyed, like, well, I, let's see, I was doing consulting for a DNA sequencing company, but then, like, I actually quit that so I could just focus on my own stuff. So I think that was a positive step, too.
Dave Jones: Nice.
Chris Gammell: Like, I'm like, I feel like I'm a bit, I'm a bit done with consulting and, like, that's, like, kind of the mid, the mid-step to just, like, just doing your own thing.
Dave Jones: Like being a product development company, basically, right? I mean, just that.
Chris Gammell: It's like a crutch. And then, so, like, you know, and I felt like I was kind of relying on it too much.
Dave Jones: Yeah. That's a, I mean, that's a common story. A lot of people, I think, I know, I just talked to Colin from Punch Through, the Lightbloom Bean Makers, and he was talking about that. And I think Mark and Joe did that for Salier when they were getting started as well, I think. Oh, yeah, yeah. But, yeah, I mean, it's a very common story, especially for product stuff. But, yeah, it's like, it's like that drip feed of, like, hey, we got some more capital
Chris Gammell: to keep you afloat. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. It's like, but the problem is, like, I feel like, for me, then, it just makes me lazy. And so, like, I need. I'll just up my rate, whatever. Yeah, I need to burn the boats behind me and just, like, charge forward. Ooh, burn the boats. Well. It's like the Viking mentality.
Dave Jones: Is that what they did? It was the Vikings that did that?
Chris Gammell: I think so. Like, there was that one story where, like, the famous Viking warrior, like, burned the boats and just, like, charged forward.
Dave Jones: I could be wrong.
Chris Gammell: I could be totally.
Dave Jones: No, I mean, that sounds familiar.
Chris Gammell: No, I mean, like, I might have my stories mixed up. But that's, like, kind of, at least in my mind, that's how it works.
Dave Jones: Yeah. Cool. And, yeah, so I've been seeing, I mean, you post a lot of stuff. I mean, you're posting about what you've been working on. And I think you showed, you had, like, a showcase of all the boards you've been working on. And there was a lot, man. Like, you've been working on a lot of different boards.
Chris Gammell: Oh, yeah, yeah. I, so, like, I have a lot of boards. I have maybe, I think, around 20 different boards, like, kind of in my queue of, like, they either need to be assembled and tested and, like, you know. And then, like, my problem is I never release anything to my shop because I'm always like, oh, I don't know. Is it good enough? Maybe, you know, maybe I just need to tweak it a little bit more. And that's, like, the worst thing you can do as a designer.
Dave Jones: Oh, just keep iterating on it and never letting it fly?
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah. I think it's, like, kind of perfectionist syndrome. And then it's, like, that's, so I realized that. And I'm, like, trying to correct myself on that because, yeah, when, like, releasing stuff always brings anxiety. Like, well, people like it, you know. Like, it's, like, kind of.
Dave Jones: It also brings this other thing, though, you know. Cash. Income. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Chris Gammell: Very, very important.
Dave Jones: Yeah, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.
Chris Gammell: Very important. 2016, the year of cash. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Especially now that I have a girlfriend. It's, like, I can't, like, I can't be, like, oh, well, we're just going to eat bread tonight.
Dave Jones: Robin profitability. Yeah. Just all ramen all the time. Delicious.
Chris Gammell: Yeah. Yeah. But it's pretty nice. I, like, yeah, there's a lot of kind of interesting designs that I'm working on. And some of them are a bit experimental. And then some of them are kind of, like, and some of them are just, like, kind of my bread and butter, like, sensor network stuff.
Dave Jones: Yeah, right. And I think you, I mean, so I'm trying to remember, so obviously you've been on the show before. And people should go check that out as well. But, yeah, I mean, so you've always talked a lot about the sensor network stuff I've seen that you were talking about. In the meantime, you pushed out the rice patty monitoring as well, right?
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah. The rice farm monitoring. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, we're actually, we'll be starting to work with Tokyo University on that, which is, like, kind of an interesting thing. So they're, like, kind of, there's, like, it's, like, it's quite a prestigious university. And then they contacted, well, one of us and said, oh, you know, like, let's talk. So I was like, oh, interesting.
Dave Jones: So what's a quick block diagram on that thing? Is it, like, long-range radio processing other stuff or what's on there?
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah. It's, like, so it's basically, like, single hop nodes. So we have, and then, so we have, like, kind of, like, amplified radio front ends. So basically it's long-range radios. So each radio could probably do, like, a couple kilometers. Wow. Or each node. Yeah. And then we have, like, one aggregator node, which just, like, takes all the data from the different nodes in the rice paddy and then sends it to a back-end server. Cool. And then, yeah.
Dave Jones: So that one has, like, a 3M card or 3G card or something on it or what?
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah. So it's using a 3G modem.
Dave Jones: Yeah. Cool. And what's the software stack on the back-end?
Chris Gammell: Let's see. We're using Python Flask and then either running it off of, like, and either running it off of our dev server or I think they moved it to, like, AWS or something. Oh, yeah. Okay. I totally forgot. Yeah.
Dave Jones: Yeah. Cool. No, that's great, though. And that's, I mean, that's great because then, and I remember reading about that. It was, like, you know, an enabling technology for, you know, basically getting higher output, right? I mean, that's kind of one of the ideas here, right? Yeah. Or was it for aging population as well? Was that another goal?
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah. It was for, like, a lot of the rice farmers out here are just, like, kind of getting older. Like, you know, for me, like, I'm 40. Oh, I just hit 42. Jesus. Sneaks up on you, huh? It's like, oh, man. I still feel like I haven't matured either. So I was like. Oh, that's okay. But, yeah, yeah. So, like, but, I mean, like, that's, like, super young. Most of the rice farmers here are, like, at 60 years old, they're considered, like, young spring chickens. So, like, they go, like, 70, 75.
Dave Jones: Wow. Yeah, it's pretty hard work, too. I mean, it's, like, easy work. Yeah, that's nutty. Yeah, yeah.
Chris Gammell: It's backbreaking. Yeah. But, yeah, it's, so, yeah, we'll be continuing that one. And then there's some other projects. Like, we're monitoring boar traps. And then, so, like.
Dave Jones: Boar, like, Neil's boar? Boar.
Chris Gammell: Yeah, we're trying to find the hydrogen atom. No, it's, no, we're, they're, like, so boar, like, wild pigs are, like, an invasive species in Japan. And so they're, like, actually in a lot of different parts of the world. And the thing is that, like, because, like, normally they just feed off of food in the forest. But then since there's, like, kind of construction encroaching on their area, then they, like, they're losing all their food sources. And so they're just ravaging the farmer's crops.
Dave Jones: Oh, right, right. And then. Yeah. So they're just trapping them. And you want to know when each one's trapped. So then. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Nice tasty dinner. Or you can reset the trap to catch other boar.
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah. So they, like, they cause a lot of problems for the farm, for the farmers. Because, like, one boar can just totally devastate a whole year's crop. Wow.
Dave Jones: That's crazy.
Chris Gammell: Like, so, yeah. The government actually pays, like, the local trappers to trap the boars. The boar. But, like, all the trappers are old, too. And so, like, you know, they can't. Like, the traps are, like, all in the mountains. And they can't, like, check them all the time. So then we're setting up some sensor networks just to, like. It's basically, like, occupancy sensors. See if, like, the trap is sprung.
Dave Jones: Nice. Yeah, I guess because if it's really remote, you probably can't get to each one by vehicle. Either it has to be on foot, right? Right. To the traps.
Chris Gammell: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So they're, like, they're put, they're, they're put, like, pretty high up in the mountains where, like. . . Or not the mountains, but the hills where the boar, like, kind of hang out.
Dave Jones: Yeah. Right. Hmm. That's, yeah, that's great. I mean, like, that's, and that's the kind of thing where, like, that is a, both of those things are such enabling technologies, you know, for. . . When I think of aging populations, that's probably not what I would have guessed would have been, like, the enabling thing. But that's really great that it is. It's so active still.
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah, yeah. People out here, like, they're, like, you know, like, they're older, but they're, like, super strong and healthy. And, like, they're really active. It's like, wow. Yeah. So, but I think that they're, like, limited in what they, like. . . I mean, I just, there are certain limitations. Like, you can't, like, hike up a mountain every day. Just, like, check your traps, so. . .
Dave Jones: Right.
Chris Gammell: But if you can, you're really healthy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you can, then, like, they'd be healthier than me. Like, I could barely. . . Right. I have to walk, like, a couple hundred meters. I'm like, Jesus, what the hell?
Dave Jones: Yeah, man. These things happen. Don't worry, 2016 could be the year of hiking the mountain foothills, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's great. So, you were saying, yeah, you call these different systems something, or what?

Chris Gammell: So, what about you? So, what about. . . . For 2015, what are you. . . . What's your highlight reel? Anything? Uh. . . . Ooh. Oh, you did the hackadate. Did the hackadate.
Dave Jones: The super con was great. Yeah. Yeah. That was good. Um. . . Yeah. A lot of work stuff.
Chris Gammell: Mm-hmm.
Dave Jones: Um. . .
Chris Gammell: About contextual? Contextual electronics.
Dave Jones: Yeah, man. That's been going for a year. Almost a year now. A year in. . . No, like. . . About. . . Yeah, a little bit less than a year. It would start in the 20th again. So. . .
Chris Gammell: Is that. . . It's that young? I thought. . . I thought it's been going on for a lot longer. Sorry.
Dave Jones: No, the second. . . The second session. So, like, the first time through. . . Oh, okay. Okay. It went, like. . . So, January 2014. It went for, like, three months. And then there was a one-month break. And then another three months. Uh-huh. And now. . . Then it started back up in January this year. And then it's been continuous since. Oh, nice. And so. . . . Between me and then two of the embedded instructors. We have, like. . . We made probably 300-plus videos this year. Wow. Which is not. . . Not, like, quantity. Quantity is not always a great measure. I talked to Dave about this, too. It's not. . . Uh-huh. It's not necessarily a great measure. But the thing I'm really proud of is just, like, the consistency. Just because. . . Yeah. My setup is very easy to kind of just turn it on. And start talking about the project I've been working on. So, just, you know, like. . . Getting through boards. I mean, like. . . You. . . Obviously, you know. . . You have so many boards that you've been working on. Just getting stuff in the pipeline. Yeah, yeah. It's so important to kind of keep that pipeline full. Because. . . Yeah. You don't want to just be sitting there. You need to. . . You know, you start on one thing. You got to start. . . You put the tenant out to fab. You got to start on the next thing. It's just. . . This is where I always kind of just. . . I start getting kind of. . . Upset. Where it's like. . . When people talk about, like, the. . . You know, I like a lot of the. . . The enabling. . . Like, the. . . Like, the milling machines. And the. . . These new circuit printers and stuff. They're cool. But, like. . . . Eh. It's not practical. I mean, like. . . It's just like. . . There's already. . . I mean, yes. . . It'd be nice to have an instant turnaround. But, in reality. . . I've got a workflow. Where it's just. . . I've got so many things to be doing. And I'm sure it's the same for you, right? It's like. . . If you're not assembling something. . . You're testing something. If you're not testing something. . . You're working on an export. You're sourcing parts. You're doing all these different things. It's just a lot of parallel processes.
Chris Gammell: Yeah, yeah. It's like. . . I think. . . At the current price point. . . It really almost. . . Like. . . Oh, basically. . . It doesn't make sense to. . . To purchase. . . Like, a lot of the. . . At least the PCB mills. That I'm seeing. Because, like. . . It's just so cheap to turn PCBs. And, like. . . There's, like. . . So much. . . It's so much nicer when you have, like. . . A solder mask. And, like. . . Plated. . . Yeah. Yeah, man.
Dave Jones: So. . . I just. . . Yeah, and it's. . . . I wore four layers. Like. . . . Man, four layers is my. . . Is the. . . The devil that calls my name every time. Like. . . Ooh. . . You could just add two more layers. That would make things so simple. Four layers. Just drop a V out of the power grain. Plain. Yeah, yeah. You know?
Chris Gammell: Yeah. Oh, four-layer boards. I like. . . Like. . . If I really need to shrink a board. Then, yeah. Four layers. It's like. . . I like to go four layers. But it's, like. . . Kind of a luxury for me.
Dave Jones: Of course. No, no. I mean. . . . Yeah, it is. It's. . . . But. . . . It's. . . You know. . . It's just sometimes. . . It's like. . . Yeah, of course. It's just easy. You know? I don't know. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. No, four layers is nice. So. . . Yeah, it ups the cost a little bit. But. . . I. . I'm okay with that sometimes. I'm not doing anything fast. I mean. . . So, what is the turnaround time on your stuff? I mean. . . What kind of times are you trying to get hit?
Chris Gammell: Um. . . . Like. . . For my PCBs. It. . . It depends. Like. . . . Sometimes I need. . . . I need quick turns on, like. . . Well. . . So, like. . . Since I do a lot of RF stuff. Then. . . I think. . . If you do an RF. Or maybe, like. . . Analog. And you have to tweak things a lot. Then. . . I think that, like. . . Maybe. . . PCB mills are useful. Because, like. . . I'm always, like. . . Playing around with different radios. And, like. . . The different radios are all, like. . . Quirky. And so, like. . . You know. . . Sometimes you need, like. . . . A particular. . . . Like. . . . They're very particular about the layout. Yeah. So, like. . . You know. . . So, if I have to wait, like. . . Two weeks every time I spin a board. Then that's a problem. But, um. . . But, generally. . . Yeah. I mean. . . It's just so cheap. I mean. . . Like. . If I go. . . Like. . . For prototyping. I use Seed and Dirty PCBs. That's, like. . . E-Instinct. And then. . . Yeah. And so. . . I mean. . . It's, like. . . $10. $20. I mean. . . Even, like. . . $50. It's painful. Right. It's, like. . . How are they doing. . . What are they putting in these things? Yeah. It's. . . So, I mean. . . Like. . . I think. . . The. . . It's really interesting. Because it changed a lot of things. Because the. . . The entry cost. . . Of. . . Doing, like. . . You know. . . Very sophisticated. . . Technical stuff. Has. . . Has fell through the floor. And so. . . You know. . . It's. . . It's awesome. Because it, like. . . . It enables a lot of people. To, like. . . . Just. . . . You know. . . Do. . . A lot more things. But I. . . But I don't know. I guess. . . There. . . There's, like. . . There's, like. . . There's, like. . . A parallel problem. Which is that. . . It only enables people. That know how to take advantage of it. And so, like. . . Then. . . Then the issue. . . Which I guess you run into. With contextual electronics. Is then. . . Of education. Like. . . Who knows how to control. All these things. Like. . . All these possibilities.
Dave Jones: Right. Yeah. It's like. . . . You almost kind of have to be. . . . Jack of all trades. Or Jill of all trades. You know. . . Like. . . Just. . . You have to. . . You have to dabble in everything. In order to really take advantage. Right. You have to. . . Or. . .
Chris Gammell: I. . . I think you have to know, like. . . That the possibilities exist. And then, like. . . And then. . . I mean. . . Yeah. You. . . Oh. . . It's like the. . .
Dave Jones: The knowing what to Google for problem. Like that one.
Chris Gammell: Kind of. But. . . I mean. . . You have to. . . Like. . . It's. . . It's one of those things where. . . . . You know. . . Like a lot of kids. . . Like. . . Like. . . Like. . . Like. . . Like. . .
Chris Gammell: Are brought up to be. . . Like. . . Kind of. . . They feel like anything is possible. And they're experimental. And they'll try things. And that's how you really learn something. But like. . . You know. . . Like. . . My upbringing is like. . . You know. . . Don't do that. Don't rock the boat. You know. Just like. . . . Get good grades. And everything will be fine. Right. It's like. . . . It's like. . . . Typical Chinese parents. Yeah. And then I was. . . And so. . .
Dave Jones: I think that's just an academic mindset as well. You know. It's like. . . The grades. . . The goal is to get the grades. And get the paper. And get out. Right. And this is kind of. . . This is what you and I talked about. . . Talking about on the show this week anyways. Was kind of the. . . The traditional educational model. And how do you. . . How do you break outside of that? Right. I mean. . . . That is. . . Yeah. That is continually the problem. That we're running into.
Chris Gammell: But. . . . Yeah. I mean. . . . . I think. . . Like. . . So. . . Out here. . . Like. . . So. . . Like. . . I live at a place called Hacker Farm. And then. . . So. . . We have like a bunch of technical people here too. But then there's like. . . A lot of. . . Like. . . Technical people with families. And so. . . Like. . . We. . And then. . . You know. . . Or just like families in general out here too. And then. . . We. . . We think a lot about like. . . Kind of. . . The education system. And. . . . And how. . . Like. . . . What's good and what's bad. Like. . . My. . . My thinking is that. . . Like. . . The education system isn't completely bad. But I think. . . Like. . . In Japan. . . Then. . . There's a lot of education reform that needs to be done. I'm pretty sure it's like everywhere.
Dave Jones: Yeah. Well. . . I. . . Okay. So this is my understanding of the Japanese education system. Is it. . . It's very. . . Rigid and test-based. Is that. . . Is that correct or no?
Chris Gammell: I think that's a. . .
Dave Jones: That's a good summary.
Chris Gammell: Yeah. I just remember. . . .
Dave Jones: I remember. . . . Talking to some people. And just like the stresses around. And a lot of like entrance exams. Stuff like that. And it's not just Japan. Obviously. There's a lot of countries that are like that. Where. . . The focus on entrance exams. Is just a huge stressor. But what does it really show? I mean like. . . It's like. . . Yes. It's a way to delineate one person for the next. But. . . Yeah. I don't know.
Chris Gammell: I feel like. . . So. . . Well. . . Basically. . . How it works in Japan. Is you're also like. . . . You're also given a class ranking. Based on how well you do on tests. And I think that's like a horrible thing. Yeah. To do. Because like people. . . Or children. . . Then start measuring their value. In terms of their class ranking. Which. . . Which is not. . . Which I feel like is very. . . Non-ideal. And a lot of. . . A lot of people that are out here. . . Like. . . In Kamogawa. Then. . . It's like. . . The cost of living is really low. And so like. . . We. . . You know. . . Along with farmers. There's also a lot of artists. And hippies and stuff. And a lot of people that just kind of. . . Like. . . Don't fall into the traditional mold in Tokyo. Then they end up just like. . . Coming out here. And like. . . And like. . . When I see them. . . And talk to them. . . Like. . . A lot of them are just like. . . Brilliant. Or like. . . Super creative artists. And just. . . Really. . . I mean. . . You know. . . Like. . . They should be. . . You know. . . They should be celebrated. As well. But like. . . You know. . . When they were talking about. How they were going through school. And they. . . Like. . . They. . . They had a lot of problems. They had to drop out. Et cetera. Et cetera. And so. . . It's like. . . And I think like. . . The whole test-based system. Is that. . . If you don't fall into line. With like. . . How. . . Like. . . The school system judges you. And then you're basically cast aside. And it affects your life. And it's like. . . . I feel like that's wrong.
Dave Jones: So. . . I agree. I mean. . . I think we're both. . . Obviously. . . We should warn people. Me and Akiba are on the exact same page on this. Not the exact same. But you know. . . We're very. . . We're going to be coming at this from a very similar angle. But yeah. I mean. . . Like. . I totally agree. And. . . Of course. Let's just. . . Let's just pat each other on the back while we're at it.

Dave Jones: I think. . . I mean. . . Honestly. . . I think. . . I think the. . . Okay. So. . . I've been thinking about how to talk about these things recently. And. . . Mm-hmm. Okay. So like a first principle here would be. . . Creativity is important. Right? Mm-hmm. I mean. . . I think. . . It's. . . I agree with that. It may. . . It may be some people don't. . . Don't agree with that. But. . . . You know. . . . That's. . . . That's where I start from. It's like creativity is important. Okay. Great. How do you. . .
Chris Gammell: I think it's one of the. . . Well. . . I think it's one of the most important skills to have. You know. . . Like. . . I think like. . . You know. . . Arts. . . A liberal arts. Like. . . Liberal arts is like kind of a foundation skill that you need. Yeah. But anyways.
Dave Jones: So you. . . You put. . . You put. . . Creativity kind of in that liberal arts bin or what?

Chris Gammell: Children's books don't cost five dollars. They cost like. . . Fifteen to twenty dollars. And you know. No way. Wait. How old are we saying here? Oh. I think for like. . . I have a two-year-old nephew.

So. . . On one hand. . . He's building his own laptop from scratch. On the other hand. . . He's building like circuit stickers. That you can like put down and light an LED. And I think that's like kind of. . . It's really interesting. That like. . . He chose like that path also.
Dave Jones: All these. . . So we. . . One of the other things that you and I were talking about. . . Before the show. . . Was just kind of the. . . The imposter syndrome. You hadn't heard that term. But the. . . Basically it's the idea of. . . That you don't feel. . . Like I feel this a lot where I'm talking to guests. Like you. And I'm like. . . I don't know as much as this person. You know. It's just like. . . . I shouldn't be here. That kind of feeling of. . . . It's kind of. . . . I feel like it's another. . . You know. . . It's kind of related to the. . . The depression thing around. . . You know. . . With the technical. . . It's like I'm not good enough. Or I don't know enough. That kind of thing. It's a lot of. . . I think that's where a lot of it comes from. And those people are probably the most celebrated in technology. Whereas. . . When you actually need to get things done though. It's all like. . . Collaborative. And comes. . . Right. Like. . . From like. . . Working in groups. And working on projects together. And I think that's probably the most important. . . Skill to have. In. . . Like. . . In the tech industry. Like. . . I think the most important thing to have. Is like. . . Like. . . Being able to work in a group scenario. And being able to collaborate. And even being open to collaboration.
Dave Jones: Right. That involves communication. And not being an a-hole. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean. . . There's a lot of like. . .

I live out in the country and I'm only slightly an asshole...
Maybe we're spoiled in Switzerland, but we basically have three levels of education, the highest being the university with the most theory and least practical training. So everybody has the choice of what kind of education to choose.
I'm totally with you, that some practical experience is crucial during education, but IMHO this is not the core competence of universities and should not be. It's very nice if they provide facilities that every student can do some practical stuff. I think it's much more efficient if everybody makes that experience on it's own, with the benefit of freely choosing the topic.
And about math, physics and so on... of course it's hard work to learn it, but I always was glad about every bit I knew, it really helps when getting into new fields. And the half life of the value of these basics is much longer than of more specific knowledge (I'm not talking about the half life in my brain, that's another story...)

ME with PhD, 36 years old
The example I always give is from my signals class in college. I learned fourier transforms over the course of a month, as those are not an easy mathematical operation. It was only in the next month did I exclaim, "OH, it's so we can see what frequencies are there!". Yes, some of that was on me and my classmates for not getting it sooner. However, it was presented purely as math. Would it have really thrown the lesson plan off to pull out a spectrum analyzer and show, "Here's what a sine wave looks like...now lets look at an AM and FM signal!"? I would have been much more interested in chunking through the math. The only thing that ended up getting me through was the promise of a good grade. That's dumb.
I was not in school to get a PhD, nor were many of my classmates. Another frustration I have is that my professors were teaching us all as though we were there to get one. I was there to become an engineer in the field, hopefully as fast as possible. I chose my school because of the co-op program, which ultimately gave me the practical knowledge I hoped for.
I feel that many profs say, "Well I got through this math taught in a similar way and I needed it ultimately for my research" while disregarding that the math without the practical ultimately scares off many students. The subject of whether that is a good or bad thing is another issue (ie. should students not willing to commit be allowed to do engineering?); I am simply pointing out that the often-used reason by professors of, "That's how it's always been done" isn't a good one.
1) You want to get a PhD and learn about math and physics for math's and physic's sake. You need to get taught how math and the theory behind it works.
2) You want to be an engineer doing the hands on stuff. Math and physics are just a tool to get there.
In the US, there's only one path: University/college. And 4 years is just barely enough to cram in the theory required by the PhDs.
In Switzerland (and Germany and Austria), there's a separate track for the practical engineering professions. It sits between apprenticeship and full on college, and you can enter it after an apprentice ship (i.e. you learned a trade after middle school) or after high school (or like myself, after you dropped out of college because it was too theoretical.. or maybe I was just slacking :).
One important feature of this track is, that it's almost always after on-the-job industry experience. You first do an apprenticeship to learn the practical aspects of your trade (e.g. soldering and circuit design for electronics, including some trade school for relevant basic math and physics). An alternative is a high school degree and a few years of work in the industry. Then, if you want to graduate from technician to engineer, you go to a "Fachhochschule" to dive deeper into the advanced topics (incl. Fourier). After Fachhochschule you even can go to university if you really fancy a PhD.

The point being: The university/college education in its current form has its place and value. It's the secondary path that's sorely missing.
I don't always see the formal college component to be the most useful part of a fresh graduate's education. Certainly it varies with the degree and curriculum, and I have a bias toward software, but what I usually see is that the formal part is only a foundation. It gives knowledge and tools, but not a lot of what's necessary to succeed.
The people that get hired are the ones that fill in the blanks with their own after-hours work. They build web sites, apps, custom hardware, and such. They explore and learn about real world hardware and software, either on their own, or in clubs. They hack and build whenever they can.
One particular software developer candidate comes to mind. He was a brilliant kid, with a wealth of knowledge, but none of it practical. He had been exposed to Python briefly in his degree program, but in his words, never learned to program. If he had gone beyond his classes and learned some real skills, he likely would have gotten the job. I'm not sure it ever occurred to him to do more than what came with the degree program.
The people I've hired are the ones with imagination, creativity, and a thirst for knowledge. They were never satisfied with the education they got and built on it on their own. They know, or learned, how to self-learn. A college education is important. In general, I don't think an apprenticeship alone is enough either. With both routes, the students attitude and desire to explore outside of the degree or apprenticeship program will be a major factor in their future success.
